With over 52 million Latinos in the U.S., it’s easier than ever to keep our cultures alive. Latina & Shebooks, a new e-book publisher, want to read about the moment that you felt the most connected with your culture and were proud to call yourself a Latina. Starting January 10, 2014, you can submit your essay up to 1000 words, and you'll be entered to win $1,000 and publication in a future issue of Latina. Winner and runners-up may also be featured in a future Shebook.
What we’re looking for
Your story must be nonfiction, not previously published or a finalist for any other writing prize or award. To be considered, the memoir must be between 500 and 1000 words. Judges will be considering submissions on the basis of their adherence to the theme (I Am Latina), originality of the story, and the quality of the writing. We’re looking for an essay that the reader won’t want to put down!

JUDGES Submissions will be judged by a panel of published writers and editors from Latina and Shebooks.
DEADLINES AND ENTRY FEE Submissions will be accepted beginning 12:01 A.M. (ET), January 20, 2014, until 11:59 P.M. (ET) on April 20, 2014. There is a $15 submission fee for each entry. Fee waived in Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, and North Dakota, where such collection is prohibited. Limit of one entry per contestant. Submitted material cannot be returned or acknowledged. Winner will be notified by June 15, 2014. Decisions of the judging panel are final.
PRIZE One winner will receive $1,000, and possible publication in Latina and Shebooks. Runners-up may be published as part of a Shebooks anthology.
